Night vision terminology explained

FOM, SNR, resolution, gain, autogating and other night vision specs – explained in plain language so you can compare devices with confidence.

What does NVG mean?

NVG stands for night vision goggles – a head- or helmet-mounted night vision device that lets you see in the dark with your hands free. In everyday use “NVG” often means any analog night vision device built around an image intensifier tube (IIT), whether a monocular such as the PVS-14, a bi-ocular such as the PVS-7 or a dual-tube binocular.

Types of night vision at a glance

  • Analog night vision (image intensification) – amplifies existing light with an image intensifier tube. Generations range from Gen 1 to Gen 2+/Gen 3; today the tube’s measured performance (FOM, SNR, resolution) matters more than the generation label. Green or white phosphor.
  • Digital night vision – a camera sensor and a screen, usually with an infrared illuminator. More affordable, but with screen lag and less performance in very low light.
  • Thermal imaging – detects heat instead of light and works in total darkness. Best for detection; see thermal imaging.
  • Fusion – combines image intensification or low-light imaging with thermal in one view.

By form factor, night vision comes as a monocular (one tube, one eye), bi-ocular (one tube, both eyes), binocular (two tubes, depth perception) and panoramic (four tubes, very wide view). The terms below explain every specification you will meet when comparing devices.

Frequently asked questions

What does NVG stand for?

NVG stands for night vision goggles – a head- or helmet-mounted night vision device. The term is often used for any analog night vision device with an image intensifier tube.

What are the types of night vision?

The main types are analog night vision (image intensifier tubes, Gen 1 to Gen 3), digital night vision (camera sensor and screen), thermal imaging (detects heat) and fusion devices that combine image intensification with thermal.

What is SNR in night vision?

SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) describes how clean the image stays in very low light. A higher SNR means less visible noise (scintillation) on dark nights. Together with resolution it gives the FOM.

What is FOM in night vision?

FOM (figure of merit) is resolution in line pairs per millimetre multiplied by signal-to-noise ratio. It is a quick way to compare image intensifier tubes – higher is generally better.

I have purchased multiple products and services from NGS — the FCS AMP tactical headset, PVS-14 checks and purging, TCA PRC radio servicing, comms accessories (PTT, cables, antennas…), NVG mounts, and more. I also took part in their NVG workshop, where you can literally try monoculars, binos, QUADs, thermals, and fusion systems. Every experience with NGS has been purely positive, and I would recommend them to anyone interested in thermal/NVG gear or other tactical products. I've also had experience with their out-of-warranty servicing (who even does that nowadays? No one!) and their amazing pro-customer approach. BIG SHOUTOUT TO NGS!

I just got my Gen 2+ wolf 14 monocular and I believe its the ops core skull crusher and mount from @nightgearsolutions a couple of weeks ago, so far it has been brilliant. I have tried it in multiple lighting conditions and it has really surprised me. Im in the Irish military and I've used the PVS 14 Gen 3 , KITE sight NV scope and the Thales LUCIE Gen 2+ devices in both training and during overseas peacekeeping deployments. So its safe to say i have good experience under NODs and the Wolf 14 in my opinion ( with the limited time I've had it ) is on power with the older PVS 14 monos that we have in service. I got the Wolf 14 as i wanted an affordable, durable and high quality night vision monocular for military exercises and overseas deployments but also i wanted night vision for hunting too. The staff at night gear solutions are just incredible, especially Matúš. He answered any questions i had and i had A LOT of questions. He had all the relevant info and it was easy to understand. His replies were very fast, mostly within 1-2 hours and he even replied to me during weekends. They gave me a military discount but i also believe that the 5% discount is also for both military and law enforcement from any country in the EU and that really goes to show what kind of a business they are. Its just amazing. I would highly recommend getting in touch with the NGS team for any Night Vision needs or questions. I have added photos. Just note that the hard case and iris was not included in my order but they did send me a free sacrificial lens. As you can see in the photos just how clear the image is through the tube. The telephone poles circled in red are 340 meters from my position. Measured on google earth. You can also see the phone lines going from pole to pole. Its just incredible quality from NGS. Thanks NGS
