Official Operator’s Guide & Best Practices
Hello operator! In this manual, we will guide you through essential principles on how to master, operate, transport, and store your Night Vision Device safely and efficiently.
For the sake of simplicity, we will refer to your Night Vision Device simply as the “Device” throughout this document.
Always operate the Device strictly within the boundaries of its intended tactical and recreational purpose—night observation and navigation. Respecting these boundaries not only prevents unwanted damage but also preserves your manufacturer warranty against manufacturing defects.
How to use your night vision device
- Battery Check: Always verify proper battery polarity and ensure the battery cap is firmly and securely tightened before activation.
- Power Activation: Switch on the Device using the primary ON/OFF switch, following specific activation guidelines found on your Device label.
- Environmental Awareness: Immediately power down the Device if ambient lighting conditions become inappropriate or excessively bright.
- Post-Use Protocol: Turn off the Device immediately after each mission or use and place it in secure storage.
- Optimal Storage: Keep the Device in a completely dry, dark environment while powered off.
- Active Duty Only: Maintain power to the Device exclusively during active use in the field.
How to turn on night vision goggles
Most analog night vision devices – including the PVS-14, PVS-7 and binocular NVGs – start the same way:
- Insert the battery with the correct polarity (many devices take one AA or one CR123A; check your manual) and close the battery cap firmly.
- Keep the objective cap on when you switch on in a lit room – most covers have a small pinhole for safe testing.
- Turn the switch to ON. The image appears in a second or two; on some devices further positions switch on the built-in IR illuminator – use it only when there is not enough light.
- Adjust the eyepiece (dioptre) until the image edge is sharp for your eye.
- Focus the objective lens on what you are looking at – close for walking, far for observation.
- Adjust brightness or gain if your device has a manual gain control.
Switch off and refit the cap before you go back into bright light.
What to avoid with night vision
- Solar & Intense Light Exposure: Never expose the Device to direct sunlight or extreme light sources (such as open flames, high-power flashlights, or powerful street lighting). High-intensity light and thermal stress can catastrophically damage the image intensifier tube even when the unit is completely powered off and fitted with a day cap.
- Daylight Activation: Never turn on the Device under direct daylight or equivalent high-illumination environments.
- Mechanical Force: Avoid excessive force—if a component resists turning, it is not meant to be forced. Guard the Device against hard impacts and drops.
- Zero Disassembly: Do not attempt to disassemble the housing, loosen internal components, or tamper with factory screws.
- Permitted Controls Only: Restrict your physical interactions strictly to designated external controls: ON/OFF switch, focus ring, diopter adjustment, manual gain, and the battery compartment.
- Dual Power Prohibition: Never combine power sources simultaneously (e.g., internal battery compartment and an external battery pack). When plugging in an external pack, remove the internal battery entirely.
- Rechargeable Battery Ban: Do not use any type of rechargeable battery for Night Vision Devices, as their voltage characteristics can harm sensitive internal circuitry.
Tips for a longer image intensifier life
- Optical Protection: Always utilize a sacrificial window and a demist shield during active operations to shield your primary optics from debris and moisture.
- Professional Support: Encounter an issue? Reach out to our technical support team immediately—we are fully equipped to handle all your Night Vision needs!
- Routine Maintenance: We strongly recommend a professional technical checkup of your Device’s structural integrity and functionality at least once every two years.
- Water Submersion Caution: Use under water is not recommended. Even though the devices are waterproof, potential human error—such as an improperly seated or under-tightened battery cap—can lead to fluid ingress.
- Long-Term Storage: We always recommend storing the Device without a battery inserted.
These are the most important guidelines, however, you should always watch out for any kind of danger that your night vision device can be exposed to in demanding environments.
ENJOY THE NIGHT!
Your NGS Team.
Frequently asked questions
How do you turn on night vision goggles?
Insert the battery, leave the objective cap on if you are in a lit room, turn the switch to ON, then adjust the eyepiece dioptre and focus the objective lens. Use the IR position only when there is not enough ambient light.
Can I use night vision in daylight?
Not without the objective cap. Daylight can damage an image intensifier tube. Test indoors only with the cap on and switch off before going into bright light.
How long does a night vision battery last?
It depends on the device and battery. Many devices run for tens of hours on a single AA or CR123A – check the specifications of your model.
